- Best for
- More hair during washing, fragile lengths or a changing part
- Routine place
- Check the change before choosing wash-day care
- Frequency
- Set wash routine: 2–3 times a week, from the pack.
- Keep in mind
- Stop and see a doctor for bare patches, a widening part or a painful scalp
With autumn hair shedding, hairs come out whole, from the root, and usually from all over the scalp. Broken hairs are shorter pieces with frayed or uneven ends, and the two can happen together. If your hair feels fragile and hard to style, Lava Derm Anti-Hair Loss Set pairs a rinse-off shampoo with a leave-on scalp lotion, used 2-3 times a week for softness and easier combing. Sudden heavy shedding, bare patches, a widening part or a painful, inflamed scalp need a doctor, and loose flakes are a question for your pharmacist.
Key points
- Compare similar wash days: note the days since your last wash.
- Write down illness, surgery, childbirth, stress or medicine changes with dates, and bring the list to your doctor.
- Detangle straight hair when it is only slightly damp, and tight curls or textured hair while damp, with a wide-tooth comb.
- Book an assessment for bare patches, a widening part or a painful scalp, even in autumn.
Start with the strands and the scalp
Look at hairs that came out on their own, on your comb or pillow, and do not pull any out to check. A small root bulb is not always easy to see.
| What you see | Next step | What it may mean |
|---|---|---|
| A whole shed hair, sometimes with a small bulb at its root | Check whether it is all over the scalp or in one area | Shedding; the hair itself does not show the cause |
| Uneven lengths with frayed or split ends | Reduce damaging styling. For a smoother, easier-to-style feel, use Lava Derm Anti-Hair Loss Set. It does not repair snapped hair. | Possible breakage or damage to the strand |
| Short hairs without obvious damage | Describe them alongside any change in overall fullness | New growth, breakage or finer hairs can look similar |
| A widening part, bare patch or sore, scaly scalp | Arrange a doctor or dermatologist assessment | A change that needs an examination |
Autumn hair shedding: what the research means
In a 2009 Swiss clinic study (after other causes of shedding were excluded), Kunz, Seifert and Trüeb looked at hair roots under the microscope in women worried about hair loss. Resting hairs were highest in summer and lowest in late winter, with a smaller spring peak. The study did not count hairs lost per day, so it cannot set the pattern for every climate, sex or hair type.
Two older studies found peaks closer to autumn, using different measures. In Randall and Ebling’s 1991 study in Sheffield, shed hairs reached about 60 a day in August and September, more than double the winter count. In Courtois and colleagues’ 1996 study, the share of resting hairs peaked at the end of summer or the start of autumn, and some people had extra peaks. The groups were small and selected.
| Study | Measure | Highest point |
|---|---|---|
| Kunz, Seifert and Trüeb (2009) | Share of resting hairs | Summer |
| Randall and Ebling (1991) | Shed hairs per day | August and September |
| Courtois and colleagues (1996) | Share of resting hairs | End of summer or start of autumn |

How much shedding is normal?
Dermatology societies give broad daily ranges for normal turnover, and they differ. A bundle in the shower is not a daily count: it depends on how many days since your last wash and how you collected it. In a 2022 study by Li and colleagues, 176 Chinese adults collected hairs after washing: the average was about 28 hairs per wash in people with no hair problem, about 52 in people assessed with pattern hair loss and about 126 in people assessed with increased shedding from resting hairs (telogen effluvium). Those are study averages for those groups, not a limit for you.

| American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) | 50-100 |
| British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) | 30-150 |

Could an earlier event explain the timing?
A doctor may assess widespread shedding as telogen effluvium, increased shedding from resting hairs. Relevant history includes illness or fever, surgery, childbirth, major stress, weight loss, restrictive eating and medicine or hormone changes. Sometimes no trigger is found.
Record event dates and when shedding began. If you suspect a medicine is involved, talk with the prescriber and keep taking it until you have their advice.
Fullness can take many more months to return. After childbirth, for example, shedding is often noticed at about 2 months, peaks at about 4 months, and fullness is often back within 6 to 9 months. That is the postpartum picture, not a forecast for every autumn episode.
How long after a trigger, and how long it lasts
- 2-4 months after a trigger
When shedding may become noticeable
DermNet describes a delay between a triggering event and increased hair release. This clock starts at the event.
- 3-6 months from shedding onset
A common shedding-phase duration
BAD describes this shedding phase. This clock starts when shedding begins.
What gentle care can change
AAD gives different detangling advice for straight hair and tight curls. Conditioner after shampooing is general care; the set’s leave-on scalp lotion has separate directions.
Do
- Massage shampoo gently into the scalp; let the rinse run through the lengths.
- Use conditioner after shampooing to support easier handling.
- Wrap or blot gently with a towel, then air-dry when practical.
- Use low heat and reduce exposure to heated styling tools.
- For straight hair, let it dry somewhat before gentle wide-tooth combing.
- For tight curls or textured hair, detangle damp with a wide-tooth comb.
Avoid
- Combing straight hair while it is soaking wet
- Combing tight curls or textured hair when it is dry
- Tight buns, ponytails or braids worn every day
- Several chemical services at once (color, relaxer, perm)
Three myths that can lead to unhelpful choices
- “Hot water opens scalp pores and makes hair fall out.” Hair you see while rinsing can include hairs already loose. A cycle change after illness, birth, or stress usually shows up months later, so today’s hot water did not open a pore and release it.
- “A white bulb means the entire follicle fell out.” No. That white bulb is the root end of a released hair. It is not the tip, and it is not the whole living follicle. The follicle is the structure that produces hair inside the skin.
- “Hair gummies or iron are the default fix.” Dermatologists advise taking biotin, iron or zinc only when a blood test shows a deficiency. If levels are normal, a supplement can be harmful, for example too much iron. A restricted diet is a reason to talk with a doctor, not a reason to start these on your own. Tell the doctor and the lab about biotin, including hair gummies, because it can distort some tests, including thyroid tests.
When to ask a doctor or pharmacist
A clinician may choose a blood count, ferritin (the blood test for iron stores) or thyroid-function tests, guided by your scalp examination and history.
For a new cosmetic, AAD suggests a quarter-sized spot that will not be rubbed away, such as the inner arm, twice a day for 7 to 10 days. Leave it on as long as you normally would. For a wash-off product, 5 minutes or as the instructions say. If the skin becomes red, itchy, or swollen, wash it off and do not use it again.
Where Lava Derm care fits
The formulas include ginseng, aloe vera, honey, vitamin B5 (panthenol) and vitamin E. The aloe vera helps the scalp and hair feel lightly conditioned. The Lava Derm set comes with a 200 ml shampoo, a 100 ml scalp lotion, a presentation box and a hair brush.
How to use the shampoo and scalp lotion
Wet and wash
Wet hair with lukewarm water. Work a generous amount into the scalp and lengths, massaging for 2–3 minutes to build a rich lather.
Rinse and dry
Rinse thoroughly. Towel-dry until hair is damp.
Apply lotion
Pump a small amount of lotion into your palms and massage directly into the scalp from roots to ends.
Leave on
Leave on for at least 30 minutes (no rinse needed).

Questions, answered clearly
Does more hair during washing mean my shampoo caused it?
More hair during washing alone does not prove the shampoo caused it. Tell a clinician about a new scalp reaction and when you changed products.
Are short hairs definitely breakage or new growth?
Short hairs can be new growth, broken strands or finer hairs. If you cannot tell, a scalp and strand examination can help.
Will my hair grow back the same after seasonal shedding?
Seasonal observations do not show how an individual’s replacement hair will look, so there is no fixed date. If the part keeps widening or fullness does not return, book an assessment.
Is there anything I can do about autumn hair shedding?
Seasonal shedding follows your hair cycle, and nothing in a cosmetic shampoo or lotion is shown to change that cycle. What you can control is handling: gentle washing, less heat, loose styles and conditioner. Lava Derm Anti-Hair Loss Set is a cosmetic routine for softness and easier combing, not a way to stop shedding.
Can dandruff shampoo help with hair shedding?
Dandruff shampoo is for flaking, not for shedding. If you are losing more hair, the cause needs its own check. Follow the directions on the exact product, because formulas have different schedules.
